Cambodia Casinos

There is an interesting background to the Cambodia gambling dens that sit just over the border from nearby Thailand, where casino gaming is not legal. Eight gambling halls are anchored in a relatively small area in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling dens is in a prime location, a 3 to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 biggest gambling locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai laborers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The phenomenal income gained from the casinos ranges from seven and a half million dollars to more than 12.5 million, and there are a number of limitations requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mostly Thai; although, financial sources are cryptic. The borders are ceremoniously open from 9:00 a.m. to 1700, and although visas are apparently required to pass, there are means around this, as is true of many border crossings.

The initial Cambodia casinos premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in 1998, leaving just 1 gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored boat gambling den, highlights one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and sixty gaming tables. The Naga gambling hall never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat banque, four tables of 21, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The original gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon opened. There are 150 one armed bandits and five table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machine games and sixty eight tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred slot machines and seventy table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machine games and ninety six table games, including eighty seven baccarat chemin de fer (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 one armed bandits and sixty six of the normal gaming tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 gambling dens in Poipet, again in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machines and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a multinational vacation and hotel complex that highlights many comforts in addition to the gambling den, which houses 10,000 sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slots and 88 gaming tables.
